THE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT CAMPUS LOVE

Relationships are not always fairytales. Oh fairytales, I mean who doesn't want to be in a relationship  that brings you joy, no tears and has a happy ending?  Sadly this doesn't always happen.  People hurt, cry,  fight or worse commit suicide.

The dependency in a relationship is supposed to be mutual if the dependence is non mutual then it creates a much bigger problem. What does this mean?  It means both parties must be on the same page when it comes to being in live with one another.  A relationship becomes toxic if one party stops feeling the way the other feels.  Feelings of rejection, dishonesty, jealousy start coming in and the relationship becomes toxic.

Most campus students get into relationships because of peer pressure. Just because their friends are dating they also want to date.  These are the kind of relationships which are becoming toxic and leading to disasters like transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections and unwanted pregnancies. You cannot walk along corridors of any university without spotting two lovebirds holding hands and being all romantic, campus relationship have become very common.

What most young people don't understand is that love needs patience.  You do not have to get into a relationship for the purpose of pleasing your ego, your friends. What is the use of fitting in if it is a forced one ? Most young people are unhappy in their relationships because they wanted to fit in the society.  It is so discouraging let alone disappointing that ends in tears,  at this point they became bitter about love and their perception about love changes completely.

We have heard of incidences where campus students have been found dead or killed because of love related issues.  Ivy Wangechi who was a finalist at Moi University was axed to death by her spurned lover, the body of Sharon Otieno and her unborn baby was also found in a thicket  incidences which left many Kenyans in shock.

Many people have decided to create awareness. An example is when Kenyans on Twitter took the hashtag #stopkillingforlove last April to share the condemnation following the rise of murders of women by ex-lovers,  husbands, boyfriends and stalkers. Some media houses through their programs have encouraged the youth to open up and share their challenges.
